and a dog carrier that protects tender newborn baby rabbits from the tame but frisky animals that surround it. Just a distance back from the petting zoo you spot a bungee trampoline. Children of all ages are lined up eagerly waiting for their turn on the odd contraption. In front of you is perhaps the most spectacular feature in the event area, a massive bouncy castle as long as a school bus. colorful-sand bottles, purses, a drawing for the Wee Monsters play set and of course, delicious foods!

Such was the scene on Saturday, August 14, at the Georgia Mountain Center. Though the skies were at an on-and-off war between rain and shine, the weather could not obliterate the enthusiasm of the children as well as their mothers and fathers and the wonderful vendors that graced the event! Natasha Gilbert was one of many parents who didn’t let the weather get her down. She found out about the event through her friend, Mr. Bailey. She tells me that her favorite part of the event is the neat activities it offers for the children. She nods at her son who, at the moment, is smiling and wiggling through a donut-shaped obstacle on the bouncy castle. When I ask her if she’d like to attend another event like this one, she replies without hesitation, “Of course!”

smile claims the Bouncy castle as her favorite thing at the event and doesn’t leave out the Bungee Trampoline, petting zoo, and “getting her hair done” from the mix.  She also would love to attend another event. Her testimony is present in the smiling, laughing and in-awe expressions of the many children at the event ranging from as young as three years old to as old as thirteen.

An event is nothing without the fabulous vendors. Stands ranged from hand-crafted jewelry, face-painting and educational toys to exotic animals, photo sessions, and books. North Georgia Zoo was one of the many popular stands at the event. Two chubby hedgehogs nestled against each other and a cute brown and white monkey sat atop the venders shoulder as he told me about the petting zoo, hayrides and wildlife tours the North Georgia Zoo offers.

At the stand boys and girls were able to catch a glimpse of the many exotic animals that the zoo has been rescuing since it got started ten years ago! Of all the animals at the stand a huge frog, ironically known as a Pixie Frog, was definitely the main attraction. The warty-looking frog is so big he has to be carried in two hands and weighs a whopping 4.4 pounds!

The chunky forest-green Pixie Frog is one of the last things visitors saw as they left the event. The Pixie Frog, the stands, the exciting attractions, and the community event itself made for a lot of memories.  Joey Brown, a five year old boy with crystal blue eyes and shaggy brown hair “loved” the event claiming, “I want to come again and again!” But don’t take Joey’s word for it. Indoors, outdoors, rain or shine, there was fun to be had anywhere at the Georgia Mountain Center on Saturday. Come see for yourself!

This crazy adventure called “motherhood” is just that, CRAZY! Warning: Don’t do it alone : ) You are not alone and those kid’s don’t come home from the hospital with any instruction manuals. So find a local support group and meet other mom’s. Find mom’s who are looking for friendship and encouragement so you can support and encourage them and they can support and encourage you!

Two groups that I know of in North Georgia are the MOPS (Mother’s of Preschoolers) groups. www.mops.org for more information and to find a chapter near you
